Zirconia In Zircon Brick
Zirconia is an important refractory material. Natural zirconia is also called baddeleyite which is mainly produced in Brazil, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the former Soviet Union.
The theoretical chemical formula of baddeleyite is ZrO2 which contains 73.9% Zr and 26.1% O2. It always contains a small amount of iron, silica and alumina. Baddeleyite is usually irregular in block, which is black, brown, yellow to colorless, with a hardness of 6.5 and a density of 5.5~6.025g/cm3, melting point is 2500~2950℃.
As the amount of natural baddeleyite is quite few, so ZrO2 is mainly man-made by zirconite as the raw material. At present, the research and development in this area is becoming more and more deeply, there are a lot of methods, the production cost is decreased year by year and the quality of products is increasing rapidly. However, China's research and development have a late start, before the late 1980s, most manufacturers commonly used molten caustic method to separate zirconite and get ZrO2. This method has high cost and makes wastes, so many experts and scholars have carried out a lot of work and achieved remarkable results, such as zirconium oxide prepared by plasma method, substitution of caustic soda for preparation of zirconia.
