How To Measure Bulk Density Of Zircon brick?

What is called bulk density? Simply put, bulk density is that the weight of zircon brick divided by the total volume of zircon brick. It is an indicator of weight for unit volume bricks. The weight can be weighed in the air directly, volume is a measure of the amount of space that an object takes up. Bulk density is a useful property of zircon brick, which can directly reflects the micro structure and influences the physical and chemical features such the resistance to slag, thermal shock resistance, cold crushing strength and corrosion resistance to glass liquid.  An increase in bulk density of zircon brick will increase its volume stability, heat capacity, as well as resistance to slag penetration. 

 

How to measure bulk density of zircon brick? As to weight, it is relatively easy got as the brick can be weighed in air. However, volume is more difficult to measure as the zircon brick is quite a complicated shape and formats, it is not very evenly shaped and it has quite a rough surface. At present, a method called water displacement method which is an useful method to measure the volume of solid object. Below are the steps of water displacement method:

 

1. Load a certain amount of liquid into the appropriate vessel and record the volume(V1).

2. Put a zircon brick into the liquid and submerge it totally, accordingly the volume will increased, and record this volume (V2).

3. The volume of the submerged zircon brick is the same as the increased volume of liquid displaced which equals to V2 minus V1 

After get the volume of zircon brick，the density can now be calculated
